Preaching Expository Preaching by Haddon Robinson. A really helpful 'modern classic'. Robinson defines expository preaching and then takes you through a 10 stage process of how to move from your text to the pulpit. Highly recommended for all preachers. I Believe in Preaching by John Stott. John Stott reminds us of the mighty effect of preaching. He tackles contemporary objections to preaching, examines its theological foundations, and highlights the importance of applying biblical truth to the everyday lives of Christians. Doctrine Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God by James Packer. I lighter read than Pink's The Sovereignty of God, but very helpful in working balancing man's responsibility to spread the word and God's sovereignty. Nothing but the Truth by Brian Edwards. The inspiration, authority and history of the Bible explained. This book answers some big questions, such as 'How sufficient and final is the Bible?', 'Why have we just sixty-six books in the Bible?', 'When was it written?', 'What about supposed errors/contradictions?' and more. The Sovereignty of God by Arthur Pink. A good old book that takes a look at how the sovereignty of God impacts all areas of our lives and theology. It can be viewed online for free at www.reformed.org The Christian Life Desiring God by John Piper. This is a serious book about being happy in God. It's about happiness because that is what our Creator commands: “Delight yourself in the LORD” (Psalm 37:4). This book can get a little heavy in places, but it's full of great stuff, and we'd be surprised if you're theology and understanding of God didn't benefit from reading Desiring God. Knowing God by James Packer. A good foundational book that provides some solid teaching. Has been read over a million readers. The Jesus I never knew by Philip Yancey. Yancey investigates the Biblical Jesus. And he finds a Jesus who is brilliant, creative, challenging, fearless, compassionate, unpredictable, and ultimately satisfying. 'No one who meets Jesus ever stays the same,' says Yancey. What's so amazing about grace by Philip Yancey. A very helpful book that confronts you with the scandal of grace. A joy to read and a joy to the soul. Winner of the Gold Medallion Book Award, the Christian Book of the Year Award, and the Retailers Choice Award. Commentaries / Study Matthew Henry's Commentary on the whole Bible. Written in 1706 Henry's commentary is viewed by many as an all time classic. Very well worth reading through what he has to say. These are available quite freely from many sources online. Here are just two places: the unabridged version at Study Light or the concise version at Crosswalk. The Bible Speaks Today (BST). A readable series of commentaries by various authors. The BST commentaries cover the New and Old Testament and are great for accurate exposition, contemporary relevance, and readability. Very helpful. Tyndale Commentaries. Another very helpful resource for Bible study and preachers. Written by distinguished evangelical scholars, these will make great addition to your library. The NIV Application Commentary series. Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. They focus on the original meaning of the passage but don’t discuss its contemporary application. The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together. This unique, award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our present-day context. The story of the five young Americans missionaries martyred in 1956 by Auca Indians. A very challenging account of their expendability for God. No Compromise by Melody Green. An exciting and challenging story of how God broke into Keith and Melody's life and and the resulting transformation and redirection of their lives. Not everyone will agree with all the viewpoints in this book, but theology is not it's main purpose - but rather the message of living a life of 'No Compromise' for God, it's a good and spurring read. Apologetics Bones of Contention by Marvin Lubenow. When it comes to human evolution, only the fossils tell the real story.
